I am rebuilding a 2003 F 150 that was burnt. I bought a new dash and installed it then I bought another cluster and installed it, now the truck doesn't start, if I plug in the burnt cluster it will start right up. Can anyone out there help me?
Hi, the new instrument cluster must be programmed so that your truck can start, it is the PATS that does not allowed the PCM to start the engine ( it is because the old instrument cluster has the code to allow so, it is like a electronic key, if the codes do not match, the truck won't start) the dealer can program the new instument cluster..
Is this something I can do with a scan tool, or does it have to go the dealer?
I know of no handheld scanner that can do that. You probably will have to take it to a dealer to get the PCM/Cluster reprogrammed so they play nice together. Good luck!
If you know the VIN of the truck the cluster came from you should be able to get the key from the dealer. The PATS needs the key from the truck the cluster came from to start. Getting the key remade may be cheaper than a reprogram of the cluster to a match an existing key. That key has the chip that the PATS will respond to.
As Far As I know According to my service manual, there is a universal scanner tool called, NGS, with this tool you can read the information of the old Instrument cluster using the Data Link connector and later copy it to the new instrument cluster after installed, but this tool is expensive, I agree with "kspilkinton" about trying to get the key remade, or you can consider the idea of doing a "bypass" but it is risky to do so,...

I do have the VIN from the truck the new cluster came out of, I got it from a salvage yard in Tennessee, I will call the dealer tomorrow. Thanks.
