3.73's or 4.10's

It looks like the 4.10's may be available next year on the CC SRW trucks. I'm trying to decide, if this is true, should I go for the 4.10's and the 20" wheels or stay with the 3.73's and 18" wheels. Makes a difference of 122rpm at 65 mph. 1745rpm with the 3.73's & 18's vs. 1867rpm with the 4.10's & 20's. I tow a 30' fiver that weighs about 10K in the summer. Annually I tow about 3k miles and put about 15k on the truck total. What are your opinions on this????

I dont think the wheel makes a lick of difference. The overall tire diameter on that wheel does. If you're staying stock or near, the 3.73 is going to do you a little better on mileage. The 4.10 is going to do a little better on pulling. I have a CC 4x with 3.73, my tires are right around 33" (285 75 16) and the trailer is about 12000 or just under. I would only consider gear change if I changed tires up - to a 35 for instance. Which I'd have to lift to fit in there.

That being said, the deeper the distance between the tread and the rim, the harder it is to get a heavy load rating. In theory, you really shouldn't have any issues getting an E on an 18 or 20, but if you did move sizes up in the future, the 20 might limit your tire selection options less than the 18. I know with 16's is darn hard to get a 35" with an E rating.

You didn't say gas or diesel. My Crewcab with a 5.4l and 35" tires need allot more gear than 3.73s. The 20" wheels will push more weight away from the axis, it might add a 1/10th or 2 to a 1/4 mile time but you shouldn't have a problem.

It's not only the engine RPMS's you want to look at, but also the amount of extra torque you will get at the bottom end. If you are looking to save gas by having the engine rev at a slightly lower RPM, then stick with the 3.73's. But if you want to have a bit more low end torque and with some pulling, I would go with the 4.30's (and I did!) Very happy with them and would do it again in a heartbeat.

Sorry about this. I had meant to put this in the 6.0 diesel forum.

Maybe just let this post die and I'll post it in the 6.0 forum. Thanks.
