I have a 97 with a 5.4 4wd. I'm getting cel codes for the o2 sensors so I thought I would replace them. What is the trick to get them out? I'm not new to working on cars but this is the 1st time I have replaced a o2 sensor. Of course I can see them just fine from under the car. I have sparyed them with PB but they still will not come loose. I started the car and let it run for a while still can not get them loose. Do I need to pull the front drive shaft? Do I need to pull the exhaust pipes out from under the car? What is the best way to do these? I can't belive it would be that hard. I heard the plugs were hard to change but those were easier than this.
They sure are a pain to get at. Heeding advice on some old threads here, I went in
from the side - take the wheel off and set steering for best access.
Advice also is to do it cold, and that worked for me. Once you have it started
should turn easy.
Drivers side is easiest. I'll confess to making my own wrench just to start the
passenger side..bent and welded some rebar to an old wrench to get enough leverage.
The electric plugs are not the easiest to disconnect when you can't see what you're
doing...they have those spring toggles that must be depressed before they pull off.
