local electronics shop claims my truck needs 2 bypasses for him to install alarm/remote start. hes saying the key is required to disarm the PCM shut off.
i did see a few SD's while i was there.
the peeps around here claim no security at all in these trucks.
I believe he is talking about PATS, do you have a skinny key or on of the thick fat ones? It's my understanding that 3/4 and 1 ton fords don't have PATS, however most excursions do. If you do have a transceiver key, you will need a bypass.
If a salesman is telling you this, tell him to ask an installer. If an installer is telling you this, go to a different shop. Super Duty's don't have the SecuriLock (PATS) systems in them and don't need a transponder by-pass. The only security a SD has is doorlocks and a plain old "non-chipped" ignition key. Often times what happens is that a shop that has little experience with SD's quickly looks through a reference chart given to them by a company like DEI and sees that F-Series trucks need a transponder kit, without realizing that's it's only the F-150 that needs the kit.
Ive done 2 early 99-00 ? f250's that did have the big chipped keys ,also one of the trucks had power telescopic mirrors , never seen any others with p.a.t.s. keys though, also every excursion I've ever done has had p.a.t.s.
actually it was the owner and he was the most knowledgable person there as far as i can tell. the shop does a lot of bizness and has a large inventory.
my key is not a large key but he claimed the S on it means it has a chip.

Those F250's were "light duty" F250's, I'd bet. They are heavier-duty F150's.
Nope, f250 superdutys , 99 -04 grill style I know your thinking I,m crazy but I'm the one that put the transponder loop behind the plastic housing , and also the one that had the customer mad thinking that I was pulling a fast one , Craig
Hey guys I didn't want to get anything started by posting that, but thats what they were! the f250 ld trucks are the f150 body style with beefed up underpinnings , I got into and argument with someone at another stereo shop about the samething , saying that they never put p.a.t.s on that bodystyle truck but I Installed them myself , also if someone had told me that and I had not done the trucks myself I wouldn't believe them either ! , Craig.

I know my 05 Harley edition had it. I think only the special editions do. He knows his stuff and is probably telling the truth.Look at your ignition key.If the opposite end of the plastic from where the key comes out, has what looks like a little trap door, you've got the PATs. PM me if this doesn't make sense...Brian

This one is sort of a Ford practical joke on the Harley Edition folks. The Harley keys really do look like they are PATS keys and they may very well be a PATS key, but the truck itself DOES NOT have the PATS system in it. Some believe Ford used the key because the normal size key wouldn't fit the Harley logo, who knows, but again, the transponder circuitry is not present in the vehicle and any regular key, cut by a locksmith would work. If you really want to know, take the steering column of a Harley edition apart and look for the transponder antenna. The antenna would look like the one pictured in the below PDF. You won't find it. http://www.gemsen.com/Ford/Pdf/PIK3_Antenna_TechTip.pdf
