okay, truck is a 93 dakota, i know it is not a ford but u guys can usually help me out. im having fuel issues. im not getting power to the pump. i found one corroded place in the wiring and fixed it and it worked for awhile. now evidently there is somewhere else and i cant find it. i was wondering if their is any reason i couldnt just wire the fuel pump up to a new wire and switch? i didnt know if the pump runs constant or not? maybe the computer tells it when too turn on/off? if i wire it up to a switch it will run constantly and im not sure if it will work that way or not? also when i hook the pump up to jumper cables it runs for like 5 seconds and stops? is something wrong with the pump or does it just get too hot with the heavy amps from jumper cables? any thoughts would be appreciated.
If you hook power to the pump directly, it should run constantly. Does the fuel rail have a regulator or is it returnless?
I'm not sure on a Dakota. I know a 97 1500 V8 uses a returnless system.
when i hook it up to a battery it runs about 3 seconds, then stops. i know this isnt right, but i thought maybe i fried the pump by running it with heavy jumper cables. also, my question is can i directly wire the pump to a switch or is the pump not supposed to run constantly? i assume since it has a return line the pump would run all the time? any ideas? tommorow i will get out my tester and see if i have voltage at the pump, but im guessing i dont
Yes, if it has a return line, then it runs all of the time. If you wire it direct, make sure you power it from a key-on source so that it won't run with the key off. You can add a switch if you want to, but I would still wire it so it only runs with the key on.
