I have a 2000 EB and the only option is 4x4 hi and 4x4 low and the awd.. im sure the awd is giving me poor fuel milage i only average between 9 and 10 MPG... i know you can pull a fuse or something like that but would that harm my truck at all?? also would i have to put the fuse back in when i want to use 4x4 hi or low???
I have a 2001EB5.4 and am getting about 16.5 mpg highway with a awd . iget about 9 or 1o mpg pulling a 7200 lb. trailer so your poor gas mileage is something else. Could be plugs , wires , valves , tire pressure, fuel filter, computer, O2 sensor, Map valve, etc. but it is not awd.
well i do need to give it a tune up im at 93K so i do have to do plugs and wires vut i still would like to know how to turn AWD off.. im sure there is a way..
i believe the only way is to pull out the front axle (or something like that). try a search, i know it's been discussed. i've got 2wd, so it ain't a problem for me!
but like art said, your mpg are quite low, and probably from something else. get a tuneup first.
the best thing i've seen for improving mpg is driving and accelerating SLOW. though i've only tried it a few times, i seem to get around 20 mpg going a steady 55-65 on the freeway. but for everyday driving, mainly city, with a semi-heavy to heavy foot i get 11-13 mpg.
Unfortunately the AWD system cannot really be disabled. There is a fuse that you can pull to stop the truck from engaging the 4x4 when it detects slipping but you cannot lock it into 2hi because the front drivetrain is always engaged and freewheeling if its not in 4
The front wheels don't get power unless the system senses wheel slippage anyway. If no slippage you only have rear wheel drive anyway.
I agree with previous poster....other issues much more likely to be the problem.
By the way, I drove 1800 miles with the AWD drive disabled becasue of faulty sensors on the transfer case, and there was absolutely zero difference in my mileage (it sucked as always).
