I have a 1978 351W (rebuilt) that I am converting to SD efi. I have ordered up comp cams 35-255-5 camshaft. Someone just told me that the 351W firing order changed at some point. Is this true and does it apply to me with this engine/camshaft combo?
Also, this 351 was previously built for a carb and has a performance cam already in it and I was wondering if that cam could be used in a 302 that I have kicking around. The 302 is a 1986 and is currently running SD efi. Of course other things have to be changed as well to make the engine accept the cam (such as running a carb) but I am just wondering if the cam can be swapped over. It's a blue racer cam from back in the early 90's and has less than 500 miles on it.
I was thinking of puttting the 302 to a non-efi purpose, and thought that recycling the cam might be better than sending a virtually new cam to the trash can.
Comp cams didn't have any firing order specs on the website for their 35-255-5. Will I run into any strange behaviours since I am using a '78 351W block and crank? Or do I just wire it to whatever the cam calls for and away I go? Any other thoughts would also be welcome.
To re-use the Blue Racer cam be sure to keep the lifters in the exact same order when moving them to the other block, and apply cam grease to all the lobes and go through the breakin procedure as if it were brand new.
The cam determines the firing order so setup the distributor to follow whatever the cam requires.
