Whats Normal ??????
My 94 F250 4x4 4.10 E4OD would run normally around 180 on a warm summer day, no tow, after a long drive, ie an hour or two. On a near freezing day it may take an hour or two before the temp gets much past 110 or 130. During a tow, the temp comes up quicker and might be 10 degrees or so higher.
Most of the charts recommend something like 180 to 220(?) as normal and for every 10 degrees above 220, you loose half the fluid life. Don't trust me on this, my memory is foggy, but a web search will tuen up lots of those tranny temp charts.
It takes a long time usually for the tranny temp to stabilize since there is so much metal to heat up. Conversely, it takes a long time to cool down too, so if you have been doing a heavy tow for a long time in hot conditions, you probably should let the engine idle a few minutes during a stop for gas etc. Otherwise, you might cause the tranny to vent some of the fluid if you shut off right away and all that heat in the metal dumps into the fluid which is no longer being cooled.
Good Luck,
Jim Henderson
