Hey yall....i have been reading through the threads for awhile now...ALOT of great info...
Here is my thing, my first diesel....and well.......it wont start. I had bout 600 dollars worth of work done to it YESTERDAY and still wont turn over....
The shop changed both the valve cover gaskets, and replaced one of the plugs that plug into the valve cover....replaced fuel sending valve....oh' tested glowplugs (thats what the mech said)....and replaced 2 of them.....i get up this morning.....got an appointment to get some new tires, and IT WONT START....i am furious if ya' know what i mean...!! 600 bux later same ole' same ole...
We need more information on what it's doing. Won't turn over, turns over but won't fire, any smoke out of the exhaust? if so what color? etc. etc. The more info that you can give, the better it will be for someone to help you. Post back someone will be along to help. And welcome to FTE.
oh' im sorry i am really new w/ the deisel thing...okay yes it turns over, but will not fire....black smoke on occassion but not alot of it........the batteries tested fine yesterday at the garage, but i was reading back a few pages..( i have read each and every post here lmao)..and it said that the PS needs every bit of cracking power that two batteries can give eh? thanks for response plow, and sorry for the lack of information........
i have to be back to the airstation for duty on saturday..lmao..and i told my pops come hell or high water im takin the FORD..lol......
I found out the hard way that if you don't have good batteries and starter it would be hard to start at most. Just put a new starter in mine and could not believe the difference. Sounds like yours is either fuel pressure or cps or hpop level. Did anyone ever check the air filter? Know it sounds silly but sometimes techs get too deep with out checking basics.
well the air filter, fuel filter and oil filter are all newly replaced, like oh' 4 days ago....and i was trying to eliminate the plug in thing, i live in the barracks and cant pull all that cord to the truck..lol...i did buy a new fuel pump.....it is leaking a little from the little holes in the side.......and the batteries were tested and both read good on the meter...i havent checked to see if the tack moves while cranking i will check that in the morning. thank you all for your input....so maybe check into the starter?
can you ask the motor SGT if you can pull it to the motorpool and plug it in? If he won't let you then you are in a **** unit or he doesn't like you. Did you check fuses 22 and 9 under the hood?
The one thing we need to know to help you out is how does is start after it has been running and warmed up, If it starts good we can assume it is not the cam posistion sensor, or any problem with the HEUI pump or control valve. If there is a oil pressure problem with the HEUI system it normaly gets worse when the engine is warm. It sounds like the shop you had it at was focused in on glow plug problems and power getting to them, (That is why they replaced the valve cover gaskets). Of all the parts you listed I did not see a glow plug relay on there, Has this part been replaced or checked, The relay in my 96 would act up once every 2-3 weeks then got worse after that. If you need to do a quick check on that just jump across the 2 big terminals on the relay for 30 seconds and see if it will start after that. It is located just to the left of the fuel filter as your standing in front of the vehicle. Jim
the GP relay is new as well, and it does click when i turn the engine over, and also is getting power.....and when it turns over and warms up it runs like a champ..! and then it'll turn over if i go into a store or something. just sitting. well yesterday i went golfing and took the truck, and after a round of golf she was a little groggy with starting, but once warmed up......she runs well....i am not so sure exactly...i hope this bit of info helped.....i think a little blowby is a factor, but not sure just heard folks talk about it.....
one other question......
when i am running this truck, i run like 60 rpms around 1800 and if i dump it to the floor, it has very very little power....is this because it has 250 k on it, or because the injectors are bad ...and can i replace the rings on the injectors, would that help? i'm looking at 160 dollars verses 1960 dollars.....any clue?
By the way thank you all for your information. I know have a basic knowledge on the system anyway by reading the threads on this site....great work Gents..
Tim, now we can assume the glow plug system is ok, also its a good bet that the Heui system and CPS are ok. The focus has to switch to a fuel problem, it is possible that the intensifier pistons in the injectors are scored, this is somewhat common in high mileage engines. One of the give-aways of this problem is cranking the engine over cold and no white smoke out the exhaust. Are you using 15W40 oil or 10W30? If 15W40 try switching to 10W30 Motorcraft Diesel oil and see if it helps. Bottom line is you might be looking at a set of injectors. Midland Diesel in Fargo, ND can test PS injectors and has good prices on remans. It is very hard to diagnose some of these problems without working on the vehicle but that would be a educated guess. Jim
Jim thanks for the info..but i was really really hoping that that wasnt it...man....for the funds of it ya' know...but it does roll white smoke...it is not burning all the fuel i know that, when i ROMP on it its all white smoke.....also there is no muffler nor Cat....so i have to get that done a friend of mine has a system he is gonna let me peice from....and im not 100% what oil is in it. i had it changed through a guy who does alot of the company vehicles......but.....so glow plugs arent it? when i plug in the block heater it fires? and runs when fired up, so still thinking injectors huh? i'm sure i will have to accept it one day just a very costly acceptance.....lmao.....but thank you all for the information..and could i rebuild (the o-ring kits from ford are 16.00 a injector) waste of money or worth looking into?
There is a guy on ebay that will sell a kit to rebuild them yourself for like 60 bucks per injector. I have heard of guys that have done with with good results. Drawback is you have to rely on your own judgement and if you have troubles your are your own best warranty. Plus, if the coil is bad the kit i don't think covers that. If you want rebuilt with warranty expect to pay 225 to 275 per injector depending on where you get them from, plus a core charge, plus the other parts needed to do an injector job. The o-ring kit you are refering to is merely the seal between the injector and the block and will help with smoke, compression, yada yada, but is not a suitable fixif the injector itself is bad.
