Has anybody found a way to get rid of the clearance lights. Anybody have any ideas decides bondo and a new paint job. Do you think maybe some type of plugs that are painted the color of the truck will look good.
if you don't really care about it being perfect and pro looking, or you are just good at this type stuff, then try some bondo and touch up paint to match, or if you find plugs (what would that even look like?) i guess you could plug it, but i thik the key in anything you do is ensure no water leakage.
but maybe a body shop can do it for cheap and save you the hassle, and they would make it look good. may be worth the money.
The only way I know if is to throw some bondo on and smooth it out to the best of your ability... paint it to match... leaking is the main concern, as stated above. I've never heard of any plugs made specifically for this reason... might be some out there... any input would be helpful!! The good news is, even if you are terrible with bondo and the job is horrible.. no one is really gonna see the top of your truck unless they are in your bed. However, if I dig up something I'll let you know... and I would also be interested in buying your old lights and harness...

Have you given some thought about switching to clear lenses? At least that way they won't look so obvious.
I think you are asking for problems. I just can't figure, for the life of me, what it is that is so terrible about them that they have to be removed. I hear of many (including myself) that had them installed after purchase, but i have never heard of anyone removing them.
I would let a body shop do it though, otherwise, its going to look like hell.
A body shop will weld the hole (maybe), then use filler (bondo) to make smooth. A good body shop will use filler (they all do to make things smooth). Then they’ll prime and paint it. The roof is relatively large and doesn’t share a sight plane with anything else so I’d imagine it’s gotta be a 2 hr “repair” with 3 or so hours of paint, not painting down the pillars or back panel. They can typically “rope” the glass (lift up the moulding) to get the paint under the mouldings. If the shop is welding the hole, they should really remove the headliner so it doesn’t catch fire.
I would “guess” you’re looking at $400 - $500 or so to have the body work and paint done, although labor and materials rates are different all over the country, and this is just all off the top of my head.
I didn't like the looks of mine, either, when I first got the truck.
I bought the Recon clear lenses, used amber bulbs, and now I don't even notice the lenses on top.
An added benefit: It verifies that I'm looking at the right truck in a crowded Home Depot parking lot if there are other Polar White crew-cabs in it, which there frequently are.
It's something to at least try, cause it'll be a lot cheaper if it solves your "problem".
Hey guys thanks for all the ideas and post. I guess I will try the smoked or clear lenses first. I really cant see spending that kind of money to get rid of them, after all there not that bad looking I guess.
I bought my 2006 Super Duty new. I think clearance lights look cool and tough (because it is usually the bigger heavier trucks that have them), I paid an extra $240 total to add them to my truck through the Ford dealer.
If the truck already had them on from the factory they would have been only $55 extra on the window sticker. So they are factory looking and do not look add-on. At night, on a 2-way street, they let the other driver coming your way know that you are a bigger vehicle and they need to stay clear of you - could be considered a safety thing too (very important since the Super Dutys can have the bigger/wider optional tow mirrors). The dealer (they probably used a 3rd party company that specializes in aftermarket add-ons) wired the lights into my factory dash switch. So no extra or aux switch was added. The clearance lights come on when you turn on the parking lights.
Inside the cab looking up on the roof, it does not have a buldge or anything - does not look any different. They come very useful when entering a parking garage for the first time at night (so you can see your clearance, hence the name clearance lights, and not hit the cab). Everybody I talked to said that they look very cool. For some reason, the more lights you have on your truck - the cooler it looks. I do not regret paying the extra money for this option - well worth the money.

The clearance lights should be mounted by way of two holes for the mounting screws and then one hole for the wire to feed through. If you removed the lights, you should have 5 sets of three holes on your roof. You can either plug those holes with those plastic plug inserts which snap into place and using a little silicon before pushing them into place, or you can then go to a body shop and have them fill, sand, paint..........
