leaf spring bushings

I removed my old bushing from my 66 F-250 there was the outter metal ring that contacted the leaf spring eye, that was destroyed when removed. My Question is. If I am installing poly bushings do I need the outter ring or can I just slip(more like press, they are pretty tight) the poly bushing in and call it good?

Slip it (press it) in and call it good, I was told by granpa that it was there to protect the rubber,,,, works for me, that is how mine are.

I replaced mine also and the metal ring should come out when replacing the rubber type with the poly ones.

Correct, the stock style bushings are there to assist pressing the soft rubber bushings into your leaf spring eyes.
