I am really wanting to buy a Ford as my to-and-from-work truck. I have a line on a couple of Chevys but I just came up on a F150 Super Cab Lariat with a 4.6 V8. It is loaded, but has 127K miles. Kbb and Edmunds lists the mileage as knocking about $1400 off of the price. He wants $7500 and both lists it at just under $7000.
You didn't say what year it is but $7500 for a nice Super Cab, even a '97-'98 isn't bad. I have 2 4.6L's with 163K+ miles on eack of them ..... just getting broken in good!
I just bought a 97 F150 4x4 a couple of weeks ago. I originally used the KBB online as a pricing guided, but couldn't find any trucks that cheap. I browsed the NADA book at the bookstore and found that NADA has trucks listed at a higher value.
It the truck is in good shape, $7,500 would be a good buy in my area.
I bought my 97 scab 4.6 4x4 w/ 170000 and paid $6000 for it. Looked up the price on KBB and Nada and the Nada listed the truck about $2000 higher. I knew the buyer really well and he knocked about $500 off.
This one is a '99. It is white. I thought that most Lariats would be two tone. This one is not. The truck is in great shape! The leather seats are seamless. It even has a power sunroof! It doesn't have a top of the line sound system, but it meets my needs. Also the cruise won't work. The front and rear tires don't match. I don't really care about these 2 things, but I wonder if they should impact the $7500 price. He says he won't take anything less.
NADAguides.com lists the price high enough, but to get Edmunds or KBB to get over $7500, I have to drop the mileage below 100k. 127k divided by 7 years comes to 18+k per year. Thats not too overboard. KBB list the usual miles at 80k. That works out under 12K per year.
Should the miles be the deal killer? How long might a 4.6 l. SOHC go?
I paid $7000 for a '99 F150 XL 4.6 with 67K. I realize the mileage is low, but felt I got a good deal. Being an XL, it's pretty basic but clean.
I guess the bottom line is - does the truck satisfy your needs and can you afford it??
Don't forget, Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds and NADA are only suggested prices. The condition of the vehicle, mileage, location and desirability all come into play.
The mileage wouldn't be a deal killer for me. I would rather buy a truck, that's in good shape, with high mileage and save money. A truck with a large amount of rust would be a deal killer for me. To get a low mileage truck with those kind of options, you will probably have to pay around $10,000.
I currently have 170,000 miles on a 96 Cadillac and it still looks and runs great. Also, I recently sold a 95 Dodge Neon to a close relative that now has almost 200,000 miles. This car still looks and runs excellent.
I think most cars today can easily go 200,000 miles.
I think its a good deal. I was offered 7k for my 97 Lariat witn 125 k on it. I decided to keep it since I know its history. I have put over 200k on my last trucks with very little repair. Your right on one thing. You don't see many lariats that aren't two toned.
I would keep looking. The 97-98 f150s have the non pi heads & 30 less hp. My 97 is a early build & has given me lots of problems. I guess all first yr Fords models do. I travel all over the Memphis area & will keep my eye out for a F150. Do you want a 4x4 or 4x2. I know of a 02 with 70k for $14,000 if its not sold. Its a 4x2 xlt, excab ,bucket seats, 4.6 & has 22 inch wheels & new tires. I think he will take $1000 less with the factory tires & rims. Its blue & a nice clean truck. He is shipping out to the Coast Guard Tues. Let me know if your interested.
I remember now that I vowed never to buy a 1st model Amercian make. The later years are always better (worked the bugs out). What does non pi mean?
I want a extended cab. I don't need 4WD, but its not a deal killer. They usually run the price up and I don't need it in Memphis weather. I don't intend on offroading. And all I have to spend is $8000 tax, title, and tags. I just happened on the Lariat driving the Dodge this week. I would have liked to see if I could have talked him down to $7000. That truck was sweet!
The NPI motors have 11hp less than the PI not 30hp.It's 220hp to 231hp just a marketing ploy.I would go for the 98 no stupid cops to deal with and they started to cheap out on parts after that.Any real problems should be taken care of by recalls. The 98 has been the most reliable and still easy to tune up (no cop)It is a fact that all first few model years use higher quality parts but also have more defects. My 97 had more than my 98 but they also had the best interior and all the covers on the motors. They didn't fix the biggest defect of all until 03 (HEADS).I can feel and see the difference inside compared to the 02 and hate the 06 seats most of all they stain just looking at them.Look at the rear end gearing so you don't end up with 331 or 308s.Take 355 minimum because it would be a deal breaker for me.
cheers

I was wrong I was quoting the hp difference in the 5.4s. I agree on the interior. I really like my seats over the 99 & up models. I'll watch for a F150 in the $8000 range for you. PI stands for performance improved heads. I had many recalls on my 97. I tell people it was assembled by drunk crackhead UAW workers on Friday the 13th.LOL My biggest problem with the truck was the evap system. It gave many problems & finally fryed my ecu when it threw a P1453 code for the tank pressure senser. I replaced most of its working parts & have it fixed. I like the truck or I'd sold it yrs ago.
