I read the article about swapping the spindles from the 73-79 to fit the 67-72 trucks. I read where the 74 fits the 65-66 without "shaving". I couldn't find what that meant. I have a 65 F100 and access to a 75 with discs. What do I need and need to do to get the 75 spindles to work on the 65 for discs brales?
the shaving that the article is refering to is where the tie rod end bolts up to the spindle. the later tie rod hook up is much thicker than the pre 74 hook up. the earlier tie rod ends had a shorter bolt that will not go thru and protrude thru the hole in the later spindle. shaving can be done on the later spindles, or you can take the whole drag link assembly from pittman arm to tie rod ends off of the later truck as jwilker suggests, and use it. john has successfully done this method, and touts that it is the best way to go........ right john?
You got it cuz. I have seen that job done. A heck of a lot of beating and banging, and rubbing, and honing, and grunting, and straining. Just toooo much work for me. You will need new trailing arm bushings, so while you got them knocked out, just drop the other end of the axle seperate the tierod and you are ready to stick the new axles in.
One of the big things that I like using I-beam up grades, over kits is every parts house has parts for 73 to 79 Ford brakes.

I am looking for opinions here. In your eyes what is the better front end a early 65- or say a 75 era. The reason I ask is I have a 65 and an old man told me that the early ones, like I have, used a very hard type of material, iron, in production of these models. He told me they are very strong to resist bending. He is a body man and has been doing it 35 years. He worked these trucks when they were brand new. I was just wondering your opinion.
cc, I am not aware of material changes in the beams. Thay do have to be bent with a special jacking system to bring alinement back in some cases. The early ones road walked a lot. You couldn't sit back and ride, you had to drive the damn thing. I don't know the year, but there was a slight design improvement that helps this. I have a 76 set under my 66.
You have to remember that it is Ford iron under your truck, and it should be suffecient. IMHO
