mirror glass replacement

I did a search and came up with 27 pages, don't have time to look through them all to find my answer. My passenger tow mirror needs to be replaced, the heated portion no longer works. I read a while back to the effect that just the glass can be replaced, am I correct, if so how does it come off?

Replacing JUST the glass, and not even the backing black plastic plate, would require cutting it out... probably need a glass shop to do it.

Easier and probably quicker would be to buy the mirror part from http://www.powerstrokeshop.com or similar site, or even the dealer, and replace the whole part (not the entire mirror housing, just the mirror itself). If you aim the mirror all the way to one side, you can get your fingers behind it hopefully, or something to grab it with, and just pull the mirror part out away from the housing. There are a few guide/adjusting rods that will slide out, but the part that will scare you is the ball/socket joint in the center of the mirror on the backside. It's what holds the mirror into the housing and allows it to pivot... it holds tight, and is gonna make a loud POP when you pop it off.

When you put the new one on, you'll want to press mainly in the center of the glass, and make sure the rods are all aligned, and it'll POP! into place where it belongs.

I took both my passenger and driver side ones out and back in like this when I added the lights on my mirrors, and it's a little scary because you think you're gonna bust them, but you won't if you're careful. Mine aren't heated, so yours may have a wire that has to hook into the new glass on the back plastic backing part.

Good luck!

I read somewhere that you can use a door trim tool for a GM to do it but can't find it now. Problem being is that my boss won't okay buying me a new mirror beings the other one is no broken. I would smash it but he would know that I did it.

You don't need an entire new mirror, just the main glass portion with its plastic backing. Go to http://www.powerstrokeshop.com and browse to the mirrors and you can find pricing... probably $60 or so would be my guess.
