Trans. No 2-3 shift sometimes.
My 99 250 showed some shifting problems today. I was towing home a car today and it seemed to hang up in 2nd gear (sometimes) and didn't want to shift to 3rd at all. Even letting off it wouldn't shift. Haven't been experiencing any slipping problems until now. We got there and unhooked the car and it still didn't want to shift from 2-3 everytime on my way home. Sometimes it would shift perfect. Got home and didn't have reverse. Had to rev it up and it slammed in reverse (like low on fluid) but wasn't. Then started working fine. I am very new to the truck so I don't know the history. Has 115K miles on it. Any suggestions? Fluid/Filter change maybe?

The transmission filter can come loose. If it separates, it can cause your symtoms. There's no real way to check other than removing the pan, so looks like it's time for a fluid change. The o-ring that seats into the valve body can harden and stick up there. Then the owner unknowingly will put the new filter in with two o-rings. Even if there is not two up there, the filter has been known to drop out of the VB.
