When I went out to drive my 1983 f150 v8, it seems to be slipping. It is a manual transmission. It will barely take off when I gas it, and when I really put the pedal down, it will go. But after it smells like something is burning bad and when shifting it will do it on all 4 gears. PLEASE I NEED YOUR HELP!!! This is an old farm truck that I need to use!
Yep, your clutch is toast. A clutch is not that bad to replace and it doesn't cost too much to replace the parts. You'll need a clutch kit, (obviously), but don't forget to get your flywheel re-ground or you'll glaze over the new clutch. A good kit should have the clutch disc, pressure plate and I *think* throwout bearing. It's also a good idea to replace the pilot bearing too. I bought a clutch kit for my truck and it was $165 total.
If you have a 4x2, it's going to be easier than if you have 4x4, but it should only take the better part of the weekend either way. Words of advice, while your under there, (if you decide to do it yourself), check your u-joints and tranny mount and any other thing that looks suspect under the truck, it's just cheap insurance.
I would think the clutch too, but as a precaution, make sure you don't have a brake hanging up. I had an F-100 and the rear brakes stuck one night, the next day I was able to back out but not go forward, the truck just sat and made a ton of smoke from the burning clutch. The tow truck had to drag it up the back with the tires locked, but by the time we got to the shop it had freed itself up. I had overloaded the truck a few weeks before, and crushed the bearings/seals. I have also had a parking brake cable stick and keep a wheel locked. Just some other stuff for you to check.
That is what it exactly is... Need a new clutch. How hard is it to put a new one in. Never have done it on the 4X4, just a car. Not looking forward to giving up my weekend, but that is life. Is it cheaper to find a mom and pop mechanic place to replace it?
It will cost about $150-$300 to do it yourself, as opposed to $600-$800 to have shop do it. I find the hardest part is physically removing the tranny/t-case from the truck. When I put a clutch in my old ramcharger, I found it was easier to remove the engine, remove coolant lines and a couple wires, hoist it out. I recently put a clutch in my FIL 94 wrangler, I had a tranny jack to make it easier.
