Hi everyone, this weekend I need to replace my two lower ball joints on the X before I have it alligned..... does anyone have any tips... I haven't changed one out on an X or newer Super Duty..... I have a 2000 X..... I know on my explorer and my previous eXpedition, it was a nightmare.... thanks!
First Off, If You Are Going To Replace The Lowers, I Would Definately Replace The Uppers While You Have It Apart. Do A Search, It Has Been Talked About In Great Detail Over Time.
I jacked mine up the other day and pulled and tugged on the upper and lower part of the wheel. No movement. I even put a breaker bar under the tire and tried to move it. I don't really get any wondering on the road and tire wear is great. Can I assume my ball joints are still good? I have 131,000 miles on my 2000 X.
Sounds like they are OK and while your mileage for the original ball joints is better than the average movement in the ball joints is not the only issue when they start to go. In my case the ball joints were like yours, no movement but my steering was not right. Turned out the ball joints were starting to bind which was causing tracking problems since return to center (caster) wasn't what it should be. Replaced the ball joints and all is well. If you aren't having any return or wandering problems then it sounds you are in good shape.
