I got stuck last winter in a bunch of slush and mud and my ABS light came on. After I got free and washed all the mud off underneath and from the wheels, the light went out and has not returned.
I have had that light come on 2 or 3 times. I have an 05. 2 of the 3 times I had just hit a bunch of pot holes and the front end danced around a bit. The 3rd time I was just rolling down the highway. It always goes out after a few hours of driving and braking never seems to be affected.
I am no expert, but I think ABS brakes use sensors from the caliper to the rotor to determine skidding. If the sensor gets dirty and the signal is obstructed, I think they complain. My guess is the mud/dirt. Sorry in adavance if this is mis-information. Does the owners manual say something?
The only thing about the "dirty sensor" answer is, the sensors are inside the wheel bearings, along with the tone ring (unless you've upgraded the front-end with aftermarket bearing kits).
The rear ABS sensor is on the top of the rear diff, again, encased and not able to get dirty.
Or the front ones SHOULDN'T get dirty and/or wet, unless the bearings are failing.
If it were me, I'd get the system scanned and find out what the trouble code was, just to be safe.
Keep an eye on the speedometer and see if the ABS light comes back on. If the speedo acted funny around the same time, it's the VSS in the rear diff (rear abs sensor).
Thanks for the reply guys. No other issues with anything other then the light coming on. Speedo was fine and so was the cruise control. I will keep an eye on it.
Krewat. do you reccommend a scanner. I like to do my own repair whenever possible
