Ok, now if i tow a 31' travel trailor V-10 2005 4x2 EX w/3.73 gears should i drive w/ od or w/o od around town or highway . On highway not towing i got 14.8 mpg with only 2600 miles on it my wife can only get 10.4 mpg go figure. On trip to pa. both level ground ! Towing i got 10.8 towing trl. going to same place. My fault I did teach her to drive i fogot to remove lead from the shoes.
With your 2005 SD V10...you should not have an Over-Drive button, but a tow/haul button. When towing in any environment whether city or highway...have it in tow/haul mode. Will help get your SD the best mpg...

Your '05 Ex has the 4R100 tranny and does not have tow/haul mode. You should keep it out of overdrive in city driving. Highway driving, only use OD if you are certain that the tranny will not hunt for 3rd.
The 2005 Excursion with 6.8L V10 is mated to the 4R100
In northern VA you can just put her in drive and drive... when towing same thing... if you get into hills where the 4R100 want to do the annoying thing we call "hunt" or it has a tendency to bleed off a lot of speed in cruise control and down shift violently and startle you as it accelerates you can just punch the stem mounted switch to shut off the OD and let the trans work with low second and high gear...
Hunting is the tendency for the load and speed sense during cruise control to not be real reliable or stable on up hill sections.
If you watch the tachometer, you can see the locking and unlocking of the torque converter as a very slight rpm rise or drop of 50-125.. if you notice the torque converter unlock as you start up a hill, you can just punch out the OD mode and get an easy down shift to high and usually the cruise control will climb the hill easily at the slightly higher rpm.. once crested punch the button again and up-shift to OD... I got so that it was just part of the trip and automatic habit even with out a trailer on the back
