also, if you don't already have a short bed ranger, you might want to sell yours and get one. Long beds will have huge problems with traction no matter what you do IMO. The only ranger i've ever seen hook to the pavement well (for a light truck) was an extended cab shortbed with a stock 351W. Steel in the rear is pretty hillbilly way of moving weight back...I like it!!!! If top end isn't your concern then get rid of the 3.73s go with 4.10s, or higher- 3.73 isn't that steep but as long as drive works in your tranny you won't have any trouble with lower gears at an 1/8.
PS if you are in mount vernon I would love to line up a couple races for you. I can arrange for a bone stock 03 Cobra, a pretty stock WRX, and my very own 79 fullsize w/ 302. If my buddy gets his done soon maybe even a 302 ranger! All so you can see how you're doing

yeah i would be at mt vernon i ve got a buddy that has raced his mustang there. thanks for the addvice.i didnt mean to get so upset at brad but it burns me when some one says i cant do somethin. im used to it by now though. i would love to race ya one day ive got alot of finish to do on the truck and may end up getting a different one because of some body issues. yes i know thta adding steel to the back sounds "hillbilly" but im from Vinton County ohio origonally so i qualify for that remark. so see you at the races looking forward to it.
hey if you want to build a fast ranger you need a bigger engine, at least a 347 stroker or 351 windsor or 408 windsor stroker, if not a 460 or bigger... look at mosterbaby's truck's engine... 521 stroker and thats in a ranger chassis... im pretty sure it could take a mustang
Monsterbaby's truck is a Ranger body on an F150 frame with the stroked 460, and it's a 4X4. I don't doubt it'll smoke most Mustangs...in the mud! Which is of course where he runs it.
But I like the idea of running a stroker. The challenge is to get it to hook up. Maybe make it mid-engine with the engine sitting in the bed, right over the drive wheels...
so hat your saying is you dont think i can build a ranger or a small truck that can take a stock or even a slightly done up mustang.
I didn't say that. Your question implied that a Ranger somehow was smaller and lighter than a Stang, I simply corrected that for you. You can make anything go fast if you throw enough money at it. My 89 was as fast as my 06 GT Stang before I pulled the 331-sixpack motor out of it. 1/4 mile times were identical, top speed was also, it's just that the 331 had about 150 more hp to get it done over the Stang's 300. The Ranger also got 12-16 mpg vs the Stang's 24mpg. The Stang handles a lot better at lower speeds over the Ranger. The only place the Ranger felt better in handling was at 120-140, the steering isn't as sensitive as the Stang's, therefore it's more forgiving to input at the wheel. The Stang's creature comforts also out shine the Ranger (A/C, stereo with CD player for a couple) So don't get upset, I've "been there-done that" with my Ranger, it's had a V8 in it for going on 5 years now, I'm well aware of what's possible and what's not.

Reason: Changed "don't get your panties in a wad" to "don't get upset"
All Right I Understand What Your Saying But I Think I Can Use Some Good Old Done Home Mechanics And Mix It With A Good Engine And Get The Same Effects. I Had An 87 Ram 50 With A 302 (i Know Its Sacreligious) And It Could Take A Stok 5.0 As Long As We Were Doing A Rolling Start. I Know That Is Not Track Racing But It Is A Testament To What Is Possible. The Ram Is Lighter Then The Ranger And I Am Thinking Of Doing It Agin Just Thought That I Might Go Ford Engin Ford Truck. I Ran The Ranger For A Test With The Stock 302 And It Was Strong But I Want More Power. I May Or May Not Stick With The Ranger Platform I May Use The Ram 50 Agin. Thganks For All Your Help And Every Coment That You Guys Gave It Was All Appriciated. Your All Some First Class Guys And You Know Your Stuff.
