I have a 2000 F250 4x4 diesel Crew Cab that has a lot of play in the steering. I have to turn the steering wheele a good ways before the tires will turn. My son is going to start driving soon and I want the steering nice and tight for him. Where do I start? Any ideas as to what may be the problem?

My 99 F350 with 110,000 miles just got dianosed for worn lower ball joints, it hasn't affected the steering that much though. You may have problems with you tie rods and/or the idler arm.
I found out about my problem at Firestone when I went in for a alinement check.
They want about $450 to do the ball joints.
Your best bet is to take it in to a alinement shop it will only take about 30 mins to check everything, then check around for the best price.
