I had to remove the rear fuel tank on a 76 F100 now the fuel guage does not read the in cab fuel tank level. The guage worked before I removed the rear tank. I removed the rear pigtail with the rear tank. So I lost the ground at the rear tank. Do I have to ground the wiring some where for the guage to work? I thought the in-cab tank would have it's own ground.
Funny as heck! Sorry I just couldn't help myself. Keep posting someone will answer. I wish I could help you, but I wouldn't mess with my own. Especially when my wife dropped 5 gallons of water in my tank. I simply put 1 gallon of rubbing alcohol in the tank and then drained it. I never removed the tank. Filled it with 1 more gallon of 70% rubbing alcohol and the rest with 93 octane. Ran like crap for a day or so. Then "viola"! Runs fine now.
Never worked on a 76 but I just put a sending unit in my rear tank on my 79. The ground is short jumper that is contained in the pigtail going to the sending unit. The ground wire exits right at the frame and screws to it, the wire is not much over 10 -12 inches long. I bet the dual pin female connector that pushes on to the sending units electrical pins ,got knocked loose when you shoved the tank up in place. I found that scenario after dropping my tank when my gauge just suddenly stopped working while I was driving. The 27 year old sending unit was still good, the pickup filter was clogged badly, so I went ahead and put a new sending unit in it anyway. good luck

my gauge aways said E just before I yanked the old bed off to replace w/ wood. I had to replace the tank anyway so when I took the sending unit out I noticed a crack in the float that was letting it fill w/ gas and sinking to the bottom of the tank. (E) I didn't have time to wait for it to come in special oder so I rapped with electrical tape and stuck it back in. Probably not the smartest thing to do but it's been that way for 2 years now & it's still working. "Viola" I know a girl named Viola. She's perrrrrty.
