My 05 has developed a light ping. It does it at cruise and on acceleration. I did notice that it goes away when I climb in altitude. I'm up to date with maintenance and there are no CEL's. Mileage is 31,000. Any advice? Thanks.
First, check all the exhaust heat shields, and the bellhousing cover (haven't heard of it rattling on '05's w/the TS, but anything's possible).
If you don't find anything, run the gas tank down low and put a 1/4 or 1/2 tank of 93 octane in it, and see if the ping lessens or goes away.
If 93 octane helps it, it's a spark-advance, lean, or compression (carbon buildup) issue.
You shouldn't have an EGR valve on an '05 3-valver, but check for one anyway. If you do have one, a clogged or faulty EGR valve will cause a mid-load ping.
Mesa Arizona.... know it well...... home of the crapiest fuel on the planet... well in the southern states any way...
You are running low on warranty days and miles V10Man
Try to get a REAL tank of 87 octane regular gas to see if it runs normaly,
High altitude and that crap Arizona 10-15% clean air fuel blends always makes my 05 3v V10 run funky.... starts to ping, anti ping engine save mode kicks in, ignition is retarded, and power is lost.....by the time I hit Lordsburg or Deming NM, I need fuel and get good clean real gasoline.....within 5 miles my 3v V10 motor pures like a kitten zooming along east bound I-10, down hill all the way to Texas at 75- 85 MPH
I don't suppose you have a K&N air filter or something like that on it do you?
I ask because oil from the filter can contaminate the MAF sensor and cause a ping.
For me its a matter of GAS selection. I know people will disagree, but when I put BP or Shell in mine, no ping and oh so smooth accleration. Anything else, and yes i have tried them all, it will have a low ping from time to time.
I have just started to have a light pinging issue also. Mine seems to occur under normal highway cruise and light highway acceleration between 1600 to 1900 rpm. I have run two brands of 87 octane (gulf and shell) from full to empty. There are days when the ping seems gone and days when it comes back on the same tank of fuel.
I guess my next step is the run premium for a tank to see if it goes away.
Mine is a 03 with 68K miles on it.
Krewat, what is the process of correcting a spark-advance, lean, or carbon issue?
I have had the banks powerpack installed for well over 50K miles. So it seems not to be linked to that for a lean issue. The banks kit does come with a k&n filter that has been reoiled once well over 30K miles ago. So the maf getting oil now?
I thought is it is getting toward winter here in New England, could the fuel be changing?
same here with the new gas. i took my excal 2 and backed the timeing down 2 degs from where i had and it's gone.
maybe racer guy or forty has a better anwser but i think this new 10% alcie gas is leaning the mixtures out and causeing the ping,
i don't know a lot about the new mix of gas but do know when we race with it the jets are way bigger then with gas to have a strong enough fuel mix.
If so, reset the computer. I wonder if you're one of the ones that had a computer bug where it would go to full advance basically, and ignore the knock sensor.
At least, it seemed that way to me, reading a bunch of posts about the same thing a few years back, like '03 or so? A computer reset would usually make it go away.
But try the better gas first, I wanna know if it's timing advance/octane related.

i think for me it's the stinking fuel with the 10% plus grain in it. my truck sure dosn't like it since we had to start useing it. when i get to the race track and dump in some lead free race 97 gas this truck runs like a demon was up it's six and on fire.
two tanks later with the local junk the light ping is back.
i have yet to try gas in pa. and don't know if they have the same junk as nj. but i'm sure my problem is gas caused, and that my fuel filters sure show how bad it is.
