73 Rear Bumper Question

Ladies and Gentlemen and anyone else who doesn't fit into these first two catagories. My F-100 has a mystery bumper on its rear. I put pics of it in my gallery under the heading "Bumper" -- very appropriate I thought. Could someone please tell me what it actually belongs too as I'm confident it didn't begin life on my F-100. Thanks

Looks like the stock "sport" bumper to me. Same one that came on the 78-79 Bronco's, some trucks were fitted with these bumpers too. -Ed

PS- the brackets for that bumper are NOT the same as the Bronco and are getting hard to find.

Yeah it seems like it was an option... "chrome or step or none or dealer" :)

I ordered a factory-step rear bumper and the dealer put an ugly after market on there, with their named stamped into it with big letters. (you've seen 'em)

I went to pick it up and was dissappointed to see that crap on there but just told them "change it".

The mechanic comes back from looking under my pickup and sez "we can't change it, your pickup has a one ton frame under it and the factory bumper won't fit and besides, this bumper is stronger than stock it's the bumper you should have" etc.

I went out to the lot where they had over a dozen brand new pickups, looked under them measured the width (you know, like nose to thumb) on several then walked back to where all the dealer's men were huddled, I joined the huddle...

"no problem you have a whole parking lot full of F100's that have one ton frames under them, just like mine :) take one of those off and put it on my one-ton-framed F150 :)" The mechanic looked at the boss and the boss nodded and the mechanic went out and changed it simple as that.

You just got to know... it happened just like described.

You also got to know I talked to several guys that bought pickups from that same dealership (Johnson Motors in Safford AZ) with those "better, stronger bumpers" that bragged to me about the fact they had a one ton frame under their F100.

No kidding. :(

I would say that it is a factory ford bumper, my 78 f100 has the same rear bumper as your truck. I think it is a great looking bumper, don't see a lot of them around here in Arkansas.

Yes that is a factory bumper.

They used that bumper from 1973 to 1986 pickups and the later "Pickup based" Broncos.

My 1981 F-150 has one of them. It came standard as part of the Explorer Trim Package.

The 1967 to 1972 F-series have a almost identical bumper, except for the mounting holes are different, cause of the different frame widths, etc.
