390 Fe rpm range.

This summer I swapped a 1970 390 with two barrel carb into my 1979 F-150. My question is what is the max rpm for this engine in stock form? The engine seems that it can pull a little beyond 5000. It looks like the intake was off at one point in time. It runs fine and has a good idle.(possibley stock cam)

There is a flex fan on it. i have heard that these could raise the rpm's a little. I am just curious and hopefully it will have 4 barrel manifold on it this summer. Thanks Nick

Anything over 4500 RPM and you are wasting your time and just beating your motor up. 4000 would be a better redline with the 2 barrel.

My C6 shifts my old FE at 4,300 rpms at wide open throttle, and the old FE will do what I want without running that many rpm's.

somewhere between 6000 and 7000 is about the redline for a stock 390. If it's got a Holley 500 cfm 2bbl, you should have no problem with 6000 rpms. The useful rpm range though is determined by the valve train (cam grind and valve springs)

Thanks for all of the insight you guys have. i have a feeling that the engine was not originally from the truck that i pulled it out of. i think it was a car or someithng with an automatic due to the fact that it did not have a pilot bearing when i replaced the clutch.
