so i waltzed down to the local ford dealer, and being a college student looked at the used trucks. had one used Superduty. 99 F350 4x4 floorshift, auto trans(puke) DRW PSD supercab. and i test drove it, first auto diesel i had driven.
i looked it over, the sales man went got the keys. waited for the glowplug light to go out, 2-3sec of cranking....fired purred. so i opened the hood. it had oily film around the turbo intake which scared me.
Took it out on the road, trans shifted fine. but it had no power. the turbo wouldn't spool up will 2700-3k. seemed odd to me. as soon as that spooled up it pulled fine, other than that it had no *****, my mild 300 6 would tear that thing a new hole. had to put the pedal about 3/4 of the way down to accelerate with traffic.
i figure something is wrong with this truck.
if my say 200 horse 300 can burn the tires till 4th gear this truck otta have some sort of oomph.
that said i will be getting a 6spd.
but what do you guys think?
only psd i have driven.....the rest were IDI's and stick.
but it didn't hesitate or smoke.
i will be getting a superduty 6spd PSD crewcab longbed 4x4 in the next few months.
what should i look out for? best years?
i will be adding an aftermarket intake to solve that filtration issue that i was scared about with the OBS psd's, is that an issue? also an aftermarket exhaust, chip, and EGT/Boost guages.
Mine starts to make some steam at about 1500, it seems like the trans is slippin makin you have to romp on it to go anywhere.
The oil around the intake boots is normal, ford routes the crankcase vent into the air intake tube (pp design).
As for thinks to look for pull the intake off the turbo make sure the compressor wheel isn't trashed should be sharp and shiny.
Use the search feature to search Powdered Metal Rods. If you plan to do a big buildup you DO NOT want a pmr engine. Search some of the mods in my sig and take a look in the sticky at the top of the page. There is a common mods thread in there that is really good.
this was a lot of oil. like from right behind the HPOP all the way to the intake the lower half of the cast pipe was stained and filmy. if this is normal, is there a way to re route it?
do the superdutys have the dual mass flywheel? or am i gonna have to LUK it?
