This post may have been done already, however i just joined and was wondering if it was possible to swap out a dash from a newer f-150 truck with a tach and install it in my 97 Ford F-150 XL ext. cab auto with the 4.2L. Is it difficult to do? Any information is appreciated.
It is possible maybe find a donor truck and rip all the stuff out of that truck then try putting it into your truck i dont know how to do it though ever think of those aftermarket tachs probably a lot easier to put in than a whole new instrument cluster..
If your truck has PATS (Passive Anti Theft System), with the thick key with the chip in it, after replacing the instrument cluster you'll find the truck won't start. You have to get your dealer to reprogram the keys to work with the new cluster.
If you can find a cluster with tac from a 97 or 98 with mechanical odometer, it is a direct swap. Plug and Play. No concerns with pats on a 97. It would more than likely have to come out of another truck with a V6 though.
