Ok. This is a long story but I'll try to shorten it. I have a 2003 6.0 with 65000 miles, F-350, FX4, crewcab, dually. Runs great and always has except for a few minor problems such as computer updates. The local service shop checked out and replaced a couple of injectors about 3 weeks ago. I had noticed some loss of power and it didn't sound right, after they worked on it the truck ran great again. On Friday I left out loaded as always, large LQ horse trailer w/horses. I stopped and filled up with diesel at a small town. About 15 miles later I noticed a drop in power. By the time I reached the next town, 30 miles, it was barely running in low gear and finally died. I called a friend who pulled us to a place to put up our horses and sleep for the rest of the night. Next morning I changed both filters. Both were very dirty but had no sign of water. The truck ran but was smoking, black. I continued on to our destination, another 50 miles, smoking all of the way. Once there we dropped the trailer and went to get some injector cleaner which we added and drove a few miles. The next day we headed home, still smoking. (The truck, not like Cheech and Chong) We blew black smoke for 50 miles and then started knocking loud. I filled up then, not at the same place, with fresh supposedly "good" fuel. About 10 miles out the smoke went from black to thick white. It continued this way all of the way home, also backfiring and shooting flames if you slowed down too fast. The smoke was so thick we eventually were pulled over by the police. Luckily he let us continue on and we made it home. I think that my injectors were fouled and now I have one or more stuck open, dumping fuel. It this all from bad fuel or maybe something else? I am going to take it in to get checked but I thought I might see if anyone else had a suggestion or similiar ordeal. Has anyone every recovered any costs from a company selling bad fuel? This could easily cost over $1000 to remedy. I already have a $175 fuel bill, $80 for filters, plus a bad weekend. I need this truck to haul almost every weekend and depend on it. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
I don't know what is going on, but I am sure one of our resident techs will be along soon with some good information. Black smoke is too much fuel, white smoke is water or maybe tranny fluid.
Either way, 65,000 miles, you still have 35,000 miles of warranty left on the engine, which should include injectors (I think). Granted it is a $100 deductable, but that isn't too bad.
Have you been running a tuner on the truck or is it stock?
Unfortunately, the 6.0 is all computer controlled. As a result, any accurate diagnostics need to start there. If I was to bet, I would start right back at the injectors. If you dont install correctly, there can be all manner of symptoms(including white smoke, poor running, black smoke, etc.) Most of these I have seen started 750 to 1500 miles after injector replacement. There is a water jacket surrounding the injector sleeve, if the injector gets loose, the sleeve can work its way loose, the copper washer at the end of the injector can disintegrate, letting combustion gasses into the fuel rails.
Tough to say, since the original poster never came back.
If you're having a problem like this, go ahead and start a thread - be sure to give all of the info about your truck (mileage, year, etc) and as good a description as you can of the symptoms.
Was just on a trip in Southern Arizona and had pretty much the same experience, except for being pulled over by the cops (but i was half expecting that). The main differences is my truck has 150 K on it, injectors are still the original, oil cooler was replaced at about 110K. I am running a Tow tune from spartan diesel on an XCal 3. I just dropped it off at the Dealer for service to see what they think it is. I will report back when i know something.
Just received a call on the initial diagnosis. No 1 injector is stuck open. They want to do a compression test on all cylinders and then assuming they are all ok, replace the injector.
1) is it possible that that damaged no 1 cylinder wall.
2) should i change all injectors if they are changing in there replacing injectors, or just have them do the one.
