Electric bill?
Now, we're in 2100 finished square feet, with another 1000 unfinished in the basement. Our first electric bill here was about $100, with hookup and admin fees for moving.
You want to laugh at something? My brother and his girlfriend share a basement suite that could fit in my garage for $750. Well, not really. His place is probably 600 square feet, so I'd have to say it would fit in my garage and driveway.
FWIW: It has been Iraqi civilians that have been helping and showing our troops in the field how to defeat cell phone based IEDs with deft hardware and software engineering. Just because they are poor does not mean they are stupid, uneducated, and do not have access to technology.
You think the apartment owner owes you a locking ****, they do not, not even as a courtesy. imo, You owe them gratitude for providing you shelter and complaining about a door ****, imo, is petty at the very least. You should be bending over backwards to make the landlord happy.
But, only in America would someone complain about a door **** in an apartment loaded with creature comforts. Typical of the grateful American.
If you're so sick of Americans complaining, then go move to Iraq where everyone is so greatful for what they have.
To tell you the truth, i'm the kind of person who would bend over backwards for my landlord. The only problem is that he is allready bending me over the other way. I've already provided him with my gratitude in the sum of 560$. Think he will lower my rent if I tell him thanks for providing me with shelter. He wont care, maybe i'd think about doing it if he did.
This apartment complex i live in is pretty much the "Wal-mart" of apartment complexes. No one cares who you are or what you say. When you walk in the door all they see is a big dollar sign floating over your head. They do the least amount of work possible to get the apartment to pass regulations. Heath inspectors have been called numerous times on these people. This is why I care so much about a 7 Dollar door ****.
To be completly honest with your rebocardo, i agree with what you say. And if i was living in a mom and pop place managed by people who actually cared, i wouldnt even bother with the door ****. Because with good management, they do everything in their power to help fix the problem. Not like my managment where they do everything in their power to make an extra buck.

You've got it all turned around here. The landlord is the one that should be bending over backwards to make him happy as he is the one keeping the landlord out of the poorhouse.
This door **** allows the person inside the bathroom to have some privacy because it is considered a COMMON room. The ingenuity with a privacy **** is so if someone who wants to shower/bath/relieve themselves can do it in provacy but if during this visit "gets in trouble" then someone can still get in to help with the use of a bobby pin.
IMO, it should a Standard practice for a landlord to have a privacy **** on the bathroom.
If I paid rent month to month,I would buy the ****, install it and then deduct it from the monthly rent cheque and attach a copy of the reciept with the cheque, with a note stating the bathroom privacy **** will be left behind when they leave.
If the landlord complains ..then ask the landlord how they like it when perople barge in on them when they are taking a dump
They do the least amount of work possible to get the apartment to pass regulations.
Did anyone "force " you to live there?
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
Why are you sticking up for them anyway?
I understand that they are out to make money therefore they do everything cheaply. This is the reason why I will never go into this type of business, or any business that I would have to screw people to make a profit. I would probabally go out of buisness because i wouldnt be able to sleep at night doing it. I'm sorry for those of you who can.
here the rental law does say that a bathroom must have a privacy lock. also a fan, proper lighting, a safe electrical outlet for your razor, a shower rod, something to prevent you from slipping in the tub.
also locking windows on the lower floors, hot water capacity per # of rooms, electrical outlets and light switches in the right places. it's all in there. if it doesn't measure up then the tenant can force the landlord to make necessary repairs or if need be, hire someone to make the repairs and deduct the costs from the rent.
it might seem a little overboard to have rules requiring these things but they're no different than the building codes if you renovate or build a new property.
and it protects both sides when the law is clear
if i was renting out my house i wouldn't want anyone but me or someone i hired to fix it. and if my property conform to those standards, then there's no reason for my tenants to go "fixing" anything and i can expect my property back in the same condition that i left it in.
anyways, no one owes anyone anything, its not like the landlord provided shelter out of the goodness of thier heart, it was for money. and the tenant doesn't owe anything other than what is stated in the lease.
i happen to have a good flat management, they replaced my mailbox key i lost for free! and also, i explained them about my job and moving situation and i now have a month to month lease instead of a full year lease (not that i know if what i told them had any effect)
and what the heck does iraq have to do with anything?
i don't think the orginal poster was being all so super serious about his plight on not having a locking bathroom door.
Sees an attractive building, and says,
"how much for the door?

Yep, this thread did get a liitle serious.

Not serious ? You jest BF 250?
His brother walked in on his future mother in law warming the ivory throne, in some states that could be incest by association ! Kiddin people. This Peter guy has a good head on him, to just be making a start in life. I wish half the 20 something young people I know used their thinking skills the way he does.
This is unexpected?
Will complaining about a bathroom **** change their opinion about people and make them want to improve their apartments beyond what is absolutely required by law? Or will they just say "another one"?
> do we owe Ford a debt of gratitude for selling cars that are safe to drive on the road?
No, because they are forced to provide them by Congress via the FMVSS.
Both GM and Ford fought tooth and nail NOT to provide seatbelts or airbags. So, you do not have to feel any gratitude because they only provide them because they have too. Both OEMs used the cheapest belt system possible, even though they both were aware of people getting killed because of false latching, including Ford when the seatbelts failed on tehir own test dummies. Ford only started to provide shoulder belts for front and rear seat passengers after many people got injured, killed, and Ford lost the lawsuits (same with GM). So, absolutely no debt of gratitude is needed.
I never considered a bathroom **** safety equipment, then again I am not Pumba

Do i expect them to do anything? Actually quite the opposite. I expect them to do nothing. They dont want to spend money if they dont have to, but then again either do I. If i can get them to do it and pay for it I'm going to. You see the only difference between me and them is i'm a poor college student trying to get an education. And my guess is that they have alot more money than me. So if i can get them to do this, then i'm going to. Whether its right or not.
By the way, my apt charges 10$ for apt or mail key, 50$ for parking violation, 50$ for pet violation, 50$ fee for replacement parking permit whether it was lost or stolen, $25 if someone steals your keys and you need to get your apt unlocked, and the list goes on and on and on. They charge you for pretty much anything. I completely understand why too, i'm sure they got sick of dishing out apt & mail keys, or dealing with angry people due to parking. Good reasons behind all of it. These are also reasons why i'm not going to go and give them a bunch more money. If they want to charge me for a bunch of stuff, then when i need something (that should have allready been installed in the first place), i'm going to have them pay for it.
Lastly i'm sure they wont do anything about it, and i'll probably just buy one and install it myself, so whatever. But if anyone knows of regs/rules to have this done by them please let me know.
Anyway, its just a stupid ****, not an abortion, not same sex marrige, not a political debate, not a question about patriotism, just a simple ****. Lets just remember to keep in mind the big picture and why we are all here, we are ford truck lovers (or should be), and we are here to give each other advice. So on that note, Thanks to everyone for the help so far.
Now, Do i have any "right" to have them open up the room with the electrical meter in it and do the circut test? Or just unplug everything like rebocardo said? Or can they keep that locked on me and i just have to find some other test. I asked the people across the hall from me, and they said theres was like 17 dollars, but i think they may have been a little confused on what i was asking, or either it was 2 people they both paid 17 which would be 34. I'm going to have to ask some more people in my building.
