'66 - 2 inch drop
I have pondered this for some time now. I will do this to my 77 F150 this winter. As I see it, when you but the aftermatket dropped I-beams I believe that other problems arise. As I scope out my truck I see that the tie rod will interfere with the oil pan and the rear support beams that stabelize the I-beam would have to be modified as it seems that the tie rod passes thru these supports and a lower job would cause interference here also. I am a machinist. So my plan is to use the old I-beams and fabricate a plate that will get bolted to the I-beam/pivot end. This plate will accomodate a 3 inch drop with a set of bolts that the spindle will bolt to. By using half inch plate and good grade bolts I believe that I can go all the way to a three inch drob no problem. This should maintain good geometry as I am merely "slipping" the spindle assembly up 3 inches where it bolts to the I beam/pivot. The only disadvanntage that I can see is that the slot in the backing plate utilized for adjusting the brakes will disappear. Once I have the plates made it shouldn't take but 3-4 hrs to get the truck lowered. (knock on wood) Lowering by means of dropping a coil or so from the spring or compressing the spring is not good for handling or the tires. Also it looks bad.
