My Excursion Died

I was leaving my daughters soccer game yesterday and as I approached an intershection traveling approx 25mph I signaled to turn and applied the brakes and they were "hard". My first thought was that I better get those checked, but as I began my turn I had no power steering. When I looked at my dash, it was lit up and I had nada on my RPM gage. I managed to throw it in nuetral and pull it to the side of the road. I sat there for a moment, put it in park and she fired right up. I had 3/4 tank of fuel.

I haven't had any other problems since.

Any thoughts?

For the record, it's an '02 7.3 PSD w/ 63K miles.

It may never occur again, or they are getting ready to go bad. Only time will tell.

My cam sensor just went out on my 2000 x ps at 147000 miles, I noticed that when i cranked it over the tach did not show any rpm's, i don't know if this happens all the time but try to start it and if it shows no r's i think its your cam sensor.

Good luck!
PS they are easy to change 10mm socket and 5 minutes and you can get one atwww.K-MansPart.com

Another vote for Cam Position Sensor.
They're easy to replace too - get the international.

That is one of the symptoms I just wnet through when my Ex died. It turned out on mine that the CPS was bad and the Injection Pressure Regulator failed as well.

The first thing to check would be the CPS.

I found out from one of the Powerstroke guys at Harrick International that if you die completely (like mine eventually did ) and it won't restart, it still may not throw the CPS code. You have to crank it for 20-30 seconds straight to get it to actually throw the code.

I did that and it showed up finally.

My Vote is for the CPS and/or IPR. Those are two critical items, so if they fail, you're going nowhere. You're still under the 5yr/100K engine warranty, so you should take it to a competent Ford dealer and see if they can't get to the bottom of it. If any repairs have to be made, they should take no more than the $100 deductable for the engine warranty. If they do try to take more, I have some info you'll need to rectify the problem. Take care.

Well, it happened again, TWICE.

Last night while driving home, it stalled again but I was able to start right back up. I kept putting it off, but knew Ibetter get a new CPS soon or I was asking for trouble. Then it happened again this morning after I dropped my daughter off at school, only this time it won't restart, so I had to walk home.

Could've been worse, but I had a new pair of running shoes in the back, my tools are in there too, it's a beautiful day here in San Diego, and there were lots MILF's getting there morning exercise.

I'll let you all know how it goes. I'm gonna try and fix it myself. If it doesn't start then, I'll have it towed to the dealer and let them work on it.

If a 3/8" wrench is too small and a 7/8 is too big, what size wren do you use?

I used a 10mm and it worked just fine. Took me close to an hour, but I couldn't find it at first. Next time it won't take as long. All better now and only have a small scrape on the back of my hand.

Oh ya, it cost me a little over $200 bucks for the CPS from the dealer. No one else had it in stock and I needed to do it today - not tomorrow. Save yourself some $$$ and get a spare.

I am also having problems with my excursion not starting at times and have now had it to the dealer 3 times but the excursion doesn't throw any codes so they send me home without my excursion being fixed and only to leave me stranded angain until she decides she wants to start again. Every time they put it on the computer they charge me 79.99 . I have paid this 3 times now and have had to pay to have her towed in twice but they aren't fixing the problem. I told them about researching this problem and the info I had found on this forum about the CPS and they laughed at me.( me being a woman) They said if it were the CPS that it wouldn't be covered under warranty because it was electrical. I could have slapped the dog **** out of them but instead I just let them know that I was going to try a more competent dealer and if they couldn't fix it then I was trading it in for a GMC with a reliable Duramax. I didn't mean that but I was furious. I just want my excursion fixedbut don't have much faith in the dealerships. Can someone please tell me where the CPS is located and where I might purchase one without having to buy it from the dealer? I appreciate it.

I found out from a PowerStroke specialist that the CPS won't throw a code unless you crank it for at least 20-30 seconds continuously without starting.

I did that and it threw the code finally.

You can find new FOrd CPS suints on ebay for $50.00 Just search on PowerStroke CPS.

I just bought two since my failkure cost me over $200 for the part from a dealer!

Sorry to hear that. That is one of the reasons I didn't want to mess with the dealer. I figured they come up with some BS why it wasn't covered.

To get to it, you have to climb under the truck. It is practically in the middle of the engine on the right side (of the truck) of the water pump. Where are you located? If you buy the part, I'll do it for for free. Probably take me less than a half an hour this time and I'm not very mechanically inclined.
