I just bought my 94 Bronco knowing that it had some tranny issues. Here's what it did...Leaving a stop light, a light thump, hits second gear hard, 3rd is fine, 4th is fine...cruise doesn't work, speedo and odo don't work. On the drive home it's fine for 2 hours at highway speeds 70-80, then out of nowhere it's hemoraging tranny fluid. I had to have it towed home. It still moves though. I got underneath it today, and I can't tell where the fluid is coming from, all lines look good. Some have suggested that I need a new trans, others just a new torque converter...if it's just the converter, how would I be able to tell?
I can say its almost gotta be the vehicle speed sensor (vss) it tells the tranny when to shift, hence the hard shifting and drving fine once its in gear. This is also why no cruise or speedo, it runs off the vss. the puking the fluid, could be becuase the tranny was over filed from someone trying to fix the problem, or the torque converter not locking up because it didnt know how fast it was moving and frothign up the fluid.
Welcme to FTE and the Big Bronco Forum. We will endeavor to get you the most accurate info we can muster.
OK, first tip off to the problem is the non-functioning speedo and cruise. Its indicative of the failed VSS (Vehcile Speed Sensor) in the rear differential housing. this sensor tells the computer, cruise control module and speedometer how fast the truck is moving. Without this information the computer operates in limp mode which will usually get you home but in limp mode the truck should not exceed about 45-50 MPH. With the kind of bleeding you are describing, you have most assuredly lost the TC and maybe the hydraulic pump as well. Unfortunately the only way to tell is to pull the tranny apart. Sorry to be the bearer of such news but I've been down the very road you described TWICE with the same model transmission that is in your 94.
