power steering for 64
I have a 64 ford f-100 thats really hard to steer. The box has been rebuilt a couple times but doesn't last long. Aftermarket kits are $800. Is there any cheaper way to get power steering on this truck? Was it a factory option on these trucks or was 65 the first year?

Fordpower; Part of the joy of driving these old trucks is the fact that much over 50 MPH they are pretty much out of control, change lanes on their own and cannot be stopped in any distance shorter than mere inches from the object or vehicle you thought you were going to hit. Adrenaline rush big time. 1965 was the first year of the modern “Twin I Beam Suspension”. 65 and up can be up-graded to PS, PDB, and after market sway bars. 64 and older can't! Check out your king pins for binding and lube all the steering components. To make steering your truck easier you need narrow bias belted tires at about 35 PSI, an original steering wheel or bigger and lots of practice. Or arms like a meatpacker. If you want the small steering wheel, disk brakes, sway bar, IFS, cool wheels and fat radial tires you should “clip it”. If you use a GM or Mopar clip you get about 50 years of modern technology in one swipe. Not cheap, not easy, just effective!

I have a '64 F250 4x4. I just recently put on 255 85 R16s (33"). Believe it or not, with the original steering wheel I can turn that truck with one hand in most situations and I don't have burly arms. The previous two owners took good care of the steering lubing it almost every oil change. I got it up to 75 MPH the other day with 3.73 gears and it handled real well.
Other old trucks that I have owned were hard to steer so I know what you are going through. Some new steering components may be the best answer.
