My 93 F-250 7.3L IDI besides having the "leak back" problem you have all been discussing also surges ahead as if I am pushing the pedal although I have steady foot pressure on the fuel pedal. Do you think this is an IP problem or maybe linked to the leak back problem. I don't think the truck has the power it should, even though I installed a Banks Turbo and larger exhaust system. I only receive max 10 lbs boost press.but Banks says that is all allowed because of engine constraints. I don't know where I can check it on a Dynomometer or somewhere else. I'm not sure if it needs new injectors, IP, or what. It runs excellant except for this latest fuel problem. I pull a 5th wheel trailer approx wt.9,000 lbs and get only 10MPG while pulling. Just doesn't seem to have the guts it should have. I don't want to "throw money at it" but I want better performance. Don't know any local mechanic I can trust to check it and do tune up. It has 165K miles on it,uses 1qt oil per 1K miles and smokes out the vent into the turbo chamber. It has a E40D tranny which doesn't impress me. Would love to be able to "lock it up" when I am pulling so it won't free wheel.Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Tom D

 

my experiences with surging
from most likely to least:

1. air in fuel
2. blocked fuel filter
3. weak lift pump
4. bad ip

 

Usually when my Dad's 92 F250 with the E4OD starts surging he has been neglecting his fuel additives.

The automatic trucks start surging for some reason when IP get dirty. Usually a heavy does of a good fuel additive for a week or two will get things back on track.
