78 has the short vin, there is not much information there. I haven't seen any information on decoding it on the web. The 17 digit vin started in 80 or 81 and there is quite a bit of info coded in it by federal law.
Check the tag on the rear end for the ratio or rotate the wheels one turn and count the turns of the driveshaft.
