Leaking steering gear

Just noticed pretty good leak out of the bottom of the steering gear on my 92. Been searching and reading threads on the best options, which seem to be replacement of the seal or replacement of the whole gear. Any suggestions or advice? What about the best threads to look at? I'm sure the info is already here, I'm just not finding it. Thanks for any and all help!!

Buckwild807,

Welcome to FTE and the Big Bronco Forum. We will endeavor to get you the most accurate info we can muster. You might check the tech articles area of the site for information about the procedure for replacing the seal or the gearbox. Some folks HAVE already dealt with this issue and I am certain will be along to offer their advice.

As far as it goes - replacing the seal should get rid of the leak for the cheapest amount. But if your steering is loose and needs replacement anyways.... but it's more money and more time.

You can replace the seals on your steering gear and seal it up for a while. The problem is you will be under there again in a few thousand miles doing it again. The hole in the steering gear is typically slightly out of round when you put enough wear on them for the seals to fail. You can pick up a replacement steering gear for around 250.00 with a lifetime warranty, and it is quicker and easier to replace the unit than it is to replace the seals. Disconnect the fittings, disconnect the rag joint, drop the pitman arm, remove the bolts, bolt in new unit, connect everything, purge the air, done.

Thanks for the tips! I decided to replace the gear and avoid doing the job twice.
