Question proper oil

new owner of 97 explorer AWD. changed the oil and filter, but manual says 5W30 oil, which I used, but under hood says 10W30. Did I screw up?

I have a 96 explorer with a 4.0 and you should use 10w30.I have the same thing that says in the manual and under hood like yours.NEVER i had any oil related problems year round when i use 10w30.

you're going to get a WIDE variety of opinions here...... but the best advice to follow is your manual. i also have a 97 5.0 with the AWD and nowhere under my hood says 10w30. manual says 5w30 and thats what i use. the only thing i'd suggest is that if you live in the extreme cold like minnesota or alaska, or the extreme hot like parts of arizona and california you could use thicker or thinner oil, respectively.
