Flathead V-8 Engine
A buddy of mine said he thought there was a place that I could buy a new/rebuilt flathead for my 53 F100.. rather than attempting to find someone local to rebuild mine.
I'ld like to at least explore the cost comparisons...

Try these guys....but they aren't cheap. $3500 for a short block, and $6500 for a long block and thats just stock!! But, I'm sure it will be done right!!

Thanks Joe..they are one of the sites I found when I googled... I'm hoping to get some prices.. My buddy and I were talking about the advantage of having it done 'right'..

My advice would be to first ask a lot of questions and try to find a local shop (or one within reasonable drive distance) that is experienced with flatheads. Ask them for a quote or build sheet for rebuilding your motor. My experience is that depending on the amount of work you can do that a complete rebuild would run around $2500 in a shop and less depending on what you can do. I am lucky to have 3-4 shops close to me that have done and still do a lot of flathead work, or at least enough to keep them on their toes. I could never bring myself to pay $3500 to $6500 for a rebuilt short or long block. Of course it is a hobby for me and I do a lot of bargain shopping for parts and have a pretty good inventory built up.

Joe Abbin usually has some pretty darn reasonable engines, from inspected bare blocks to full-on blower motors. His outfit is Roadrunner Engineering in Albuquerque, don't have the link handy. Last I heard, bare inspected (i.e., no cracks) blocks were under $500. Shipping is a big thing with anyone.

BTW - the bare blocks that Joe Abbin has in Alb-q are $650.00/ea. There is a guy in Lexington, NC that has bare uncracked blocks for $450.00.
You might try to get invovled with a local EARLY FORD V8 club. There are usually a couple of 70 year old + guys with a two or three FH's floating around in these clubs and not enough time left to do anything with them. It's another idea.

i have a 49, 239 flathead i took out of mine. i have been thinking of selling it to off set my rebuild. not trying to make this thread a garage sale tho. pm me if interested, it ran great when i took it out this spring. it has a 3 speed trans and buyer must take all.
