Hypermax cowl air induction

Has anyone tried the cowl induction? Where on the firewall is it placed, and is it worth the money?

From all I've read, IDI's need cool dense air, ie intercooler...I have played around with air induction quit a bit with my 86 and found a combo that finally worked well, dual ram air, in fact there is a recent thread with some great pics ["new intake idea"] also look at Dave S gallery, lol.

DUDE! Since you have a dual ram-air setup, you need to add a picture of YOURS to that ["new intake idea"] thread

'Cmon man, give it up, show us your setup!

The pics I saw of the Hypermax deal just plumbed the air cleaner to the wiper cowl area. Not a good place to get any ram air effect, so what's the point?

Cheaper, I don't have a digital camera but when I do I'll take pics of my 84 6.9 4x4 4speed extended cab that has been completely restored except the IDI.

The main point of pulling air off the cowl is trying to make use of the high pressure area formed while driving, although I agree. probably not the best place, especially offset like theirs.

Does it work though? Has anyone tried it and where how does it mount up?

How much does that affect the heater output?

I've actually heard that most rigs build a slight vacuum in that area.

If there's no high pressure there's no ram-air effect.

I'd also wonder about how much water, snow, etc. would make it into the intake with a setup like that. Here in Seattle, a setup like that would let in too much precipitation I'd think. But, at least there's a screen to keep the bugs, leaves, and debris out of the intake, and since you've raised the intake point about a foot, the danger of hydrolock during water crossings would be less.....

Actually, the area at the base of the windsheild is high pressure, as the air is being forced against it before being wedged up the windsheild. Aren't any of you muscle car enthusiasts? That was why cowl induction on the 70's Chevelles and 60's Camaro's were a big deal. Also had a scoop over to the side like that on the 82-85 Trans Am's.The older T/A's also had the shaker scoop facing backwards toward the windsheild.
I don't run one, just found a pic of someone that does. They claim it did help. I would think there is some benefit, or Hypermax wouldn't have wasted their time. It is better flow than factory apparently.

That pic you posted looks pretty good Fellro86. Also take notice of the Banks High Ram intake lid on top of the air cleaner. You can barely see the letters on top of the lid from the camera angle but they are visible. Do you think that is part of the improvement in flow? I got to looking at a Banks High Ram lid that was on ebay. Instead of being flat, they suck in closer to the intake manifold. If I can find a pic of just the lid I will get it posted.
