5 speed
My question is, will a 5 speed from a 87-96 style fit in a 78-79 f-150 2 wheel drive still keeping the original clutch linkage, or is the transmission a 1 piece unit in the newer ones. Also what is the best way to beef the rear springs with out affecting the ride to much. And what is the best fuel milage V-8 in your opinion for that truck with the 5 speed and ???????? rear gears, What is the best ratio for pulling and hiway? Thanks

You will have to switch to a hydraulic clutch to use the Mazda tranny that came in 1/2 tons behind 302s in 87-96. I'm not sure about the ZF tranny from the 3/4 tons. If you do go to the OD 3.73 gears would work well.

460 ZFs had mechanical clutch linkage. If you have a 351-400 or 460, you can use the 460 ZF and make your stock linkage work. Look in my gallery, I have some pictures of the ZF swap I did in my truck.
