got a couple questions for yall out there, first i am thinkin about swappin the tired 400 out in the ole 79 for a 460, its a supercab 4x4 with a t-18 4-speed, what all is required as far as parts, i know the bell housing and the distributor will interchange. the other question i have is, are the frame mounts the same, this is my first 4x4 65-79 front end to work with, done many two wheel drives, i know the 460 uses its own style frame mounts in those applications, that in itself kinda dictates the go or no go on the project, and whats yall's opinion, would it be better to build a mild 460 or a decent 400? as far as money wise dollar for dollar
id go the mild 460- but then again im partial to the 460
youll have to buy special engine swap motor mounts- they are about 90 dollars from summitracing.com, and if its a car engine you get instead of one from a van or truck youll need a rear sump pan kit- also available from summitracing.com
also when looking for a 460 every year except 1972 was good... but fuel injected heads wont take a carb intake
the bad casting number is d2ve-aa, i had a set of those heads on my old lincoln and i can attest to them sucking
yea i have a rear sump pan off a 79 ford van, also i agree with the D2 heads, they indeed suck, i have a set of C9VE 429 heads but i am thinkin about using the edlebrocks or motorsports heads, this is going to be a project for the ole truck when i come back from iraq, when i got the money to do what i want with it, thing is, it just seems hard to make my goal of 500 ftlbs with a 400, maybe it aint but just seeems like it'd be easier with a 460
lol 500 ft-lbs? you could do that just by porting your stock c9s, gapless piston rings, bigger cam, port match the intake, headers, and an edelbrock 750 carb... im going all out for torque- 545 stroker, hydraulic roller retrofit cam and lifters, stainless 1.8 roller rockers, blue thunder heads, dual quad intake, and heres the twist- running dual impco 425 propane carbs and 12.5 to 1 static compression... with the cam it comes out to be 9.8 dynamic- 101 octane required- and propane is 103-104
it should put out around 700 ft lbs and 450-500 horse and do it for 250-300,000 miles
and yes torque is always easier with more cubes
