My 70 F250 CS w/ 360 has a ruff idle that smooths out as rpms increase. I just tuned it up w/ new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, Pertronix ign module and coil. It runs better but still has the ruff idle, thanks for the tips on my last post. Some potential culprits, It does have an exhaust leak at one of the manifold donuts and the carb has never been rebuilt since I have bought the truck in 1991. It appears that the vacuum lines are ok but I have checked them really close. What should I check for?
Was gasoline bought at different gas station from when last carb tune-up was done ?
Find a place that sells lost of gasoline and buy from them, that way you are always assured of fresh and the same gasoline all the time until they change suppliers.
Mil1ion, Perhaps I was unclear on my post, the truck has had a ruff idle for several years but I have not taken the time to do something about it. I no longer have access to a company truck so I now drive the old truck weekly and farther than before so I want to solve this problem and get it running good. I am not a master mechanic but can get by, I am hoping for some tips to solve this problem.
Since the carb has never been rebuilt, it is very possible that the part of the carb that lets gas through at idle is clogged. As you open the accelerator, the primary jet takes over supplying the gas.
You didn't say what kind of carb you have, but whatever it is, buying a carb rebuild kit is probably a good idea. They usually come with pretty good instructions. One tip, once you start, take it through all the way to the end. If you let it sit for a few days, you'll forget what little bit goes where.
