I just re-installed my Hyper-tech chip after having the transmission rebuilt. The truck is not what I would consider fast but it sure did make a difference. What do these chips do? Is there any long term damage? I notice the truck puffs black smoke now when I accelerate. I am not sure what this will do to my mileage but I sure am enjoying the power.
If you think it's nice like it is you should save up about $200 and do a Tymar or Tymar-like intake and a downpipe set of mods. Getting more air in and more flow out after the turbo really jacks up the performance and it does not kill fuel mileage. In fact, if you can control the thrill of the throttle stomp you can get even better mileage because the truck works less to flow the air into the fuel vapor in the cylinder. I'm glad you like it the way it is, though. It is fun to work on these trucks and to get more out of them.
OK. I have the bug. I just took a long trip towing my race car. I need more power. I said I was going to leave the truck stock. I am a liar.
I would like to see more power and better economy. Where do I go to find the parts? I am not made of money (if I were I would be driving a newer truck).
I am a little disappointed. I used to have a 2002 PSD and it had a great deal more power. It was equipped the same except it had 3:73's and it pulled much better than this 97 does. What do I need to do to get the power to be comparable to the 2002's?
You should have kept the 2002, going from newer to older is bound to upset your perception of power. Jcab

true blue, do a down pipe upgrade, cat delete and open air intake for starters. Then get a set of gauges, and then money will be the only limiting factor. Bigger Injectors, Custom Chip, Bigger Oil, Bigger Fuel, Intercooler, New Turbo, Dual Turbo's, etc. etc. You get the picture. Have Fun.

OH sure would I like to have the 2002 back? You bet! I traded the truck because my wife complained about it non stop. Necessity drove me back to a truck with a PSD. She still complains ("It smells" "It's noisy") but I am over it now. The 97 is all I could afford. I refuse to go into debt again. I may have liked the 2002 but I sure like not having a truck payment. I can work on this one and get the power up there where I can be happy without a monthly truck bill. I just don't know a darn thing about these trucks. They are quite different from a Mustang.
IT ALWAYS GETS DOWN TO MONEY, TRUCK PAYMENTS ARE NOT IN MY VOCABULARY EITHER. I HAVE THE SAME EXACT TRUCK YOU HAVE NOW. BY THE TIME YOU INSTALL ALL THE MOD'S THESE GUYS HAVE YOU DO, YOU MIGHT HAVE THE COST OF A 2002! SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO BE HAPPY WITH WHAT YOU GOT, I'VE BEEN TELLIING MYSELF THAT FOR YEARS. SOMEDAY I'LL GET IT. JCAB

be careful .... chips and programmers up line pressure in the transmission. When you had your tranny rebuilt did they put a shift kit in it? If so .. you might be stacking line pressure on top of pressure. I learned this the hard way ... 11k mile tranny. Might want to calll Hyper-Tec and see...

You are flirting with disaster.
If you run a chip your Exhaust Gas Temp is going to increase possibly to the point of major damage to your engine.
The proper way to chip is to have an EGT gauge (minimum) in place before adding the chip. Preferably you would have the exaust mod (with new downpipe) and an improved Air Intake System before the chip.
The exhaust and air intake mods help keep EGT down and the EGT gauge allows you to monitor it so you dont damage your truck.

in this case it is not a matter of option. If you want to upgrade the performance of your engine you need a solid foundation in this case improved aspiration and monitoring.

OPEN AIR INTAKE AND LARGER EXHAUST, AND GAUGES, ARE THE FIRST THING TO DO, BIGGER INJECTORS THATS WHEN YOU GET INTO ALOT MORE MONEY.

JCAB.
I said nothing about bigger injectors or anything past chipping.
What I said was if you want to chip do it right.

The idea is to avoid spending money to repair your truck when the repairs could have been avoided by some minor mods.

They did put a Sonnax in it. I did not notice any changes in the way the transmission shifts. It shifts exactly the same as it did before. The chip was in the truck unknowingly when I bought it. By the date on the chip it has been in there since 1997. The motor has 200k on it and the transmission was original and made it to 199,000 without catastrophic failure. I do wonder what the exhaust temps are. I will have to check on the line pressure as well. Thanks for all the info. You guys are great!

Some of those early chips were really minimal in enhancement. Many of them were aimed more at optimizing fuel economy, which often remarkably improved performance.
Most of the latter multi programed chips have a "Tow Safe" setting, which pretty much equates to those early (usually 40 HP) chips.
If your chip is one of those you're probably pretty safe.
It feels like maybe 25+ horsepower increase. Helps it get off the line a little better and a little more torque but nothing that will set any records. A newer truck will still smoke me. I would like to get a set of gauges though. I think that will be my first Mod. I would like to have the programer by Edge. It seems to be the only one I can taylor myself for the 97.
