Stinking 3.8

I'm really growing weary of this engine.

Resealed the the intakes, o-rings on the injectors, all new ignition components......finally shotgun maintained all the codes out of it and it ran perfectly......for one month.

SO yesterday MrsCookie gets home and the pig is running like a pig once again. Misfiring badly in the #3 hole and an evaporative emissions code to boot. According to the service manual check list the only thing in common between those two codes is the EVAP cannister purge valve, so I'll put one of those in it. Problem is nobody seems to ever of heard of the thing.

Dealer only item? Has anyone EVER had a purge valve fail on them? I found the thing on the firewall....easy to change if I can find one. Any help?

P.S. I already replaced the gas cap. Wasn't the problem. Also chased all the vacuum lines and electrical connectors from the fuel tank filler neck to the intake manifold. It has to be a hard part failure.

2000 Windstar 3.8 100,000 miles.

Scott,
I know the thing you speak of but have never heard of one failing.

Just curious: where does the PCV valve line hook in to the intake? Near the#3 cylinder?

Nope, It's between 5 & 6.

Went out of town the last four days so I haven't had a chance to mess with it, but momma says she smells gas when she starts it, and that coupled with the fact that both codes (P0303 & P0455) and the bad running popped up at the same time puts my focus in the evap system.

I haven't found the part yet, for purchase that is, but it's been suggested to me that it may be physically stuck closed. After it cools off a little bit I'm going to go see if I can get it unstuck.

What's your thinking with the PCV?

Nothing particular on the PCV line. Just wondered, but later thinking had be believe there likely was not relation.
I suspect you are on the right track.
Ain't it a pain? I have been so lucky with my two F150s.
233,000 miles between the two and never anything like what you are going through.

Anyways, is this the part you are looking for?
If so, check with Motorcraft.com, or maybe some of the FTE site sponsors can help.

Turns out it was two different problems that happened at the same time. I removed the purge valve and blew through the intake port while applying vacuum to the vacuum port. A dozen or so cycles and it freed up and worked pretty easily, so I put it back on.

Still had a miss after that so a closer inspection revealed thet the #3 plug wire had come out of the loom and burned itself almost completely in two on the exhaust manifold. Sure would be nice if one could see the back three plugs on this motor without a jet light and inspection mirror.

Anyways.....running like a top again, for now anyways.

Thanks for the help.
