Is this the 1985 van? If so, there are some things to check;
1. Idle speed. Is it to the spec on the radiator sticker?
2. Belt tension/pulley condition.
3. Alternator health. Rev the engine while holding a voltmeter on the battery terminals. You should get about 14.5 volts. If you get something like 13, you may have a bad diode in the alternator. The local parts store tester may pick this up too if you want to have them test it.
