Confused

I downloaded 2 copies of the 6.0 ltr supplement maintenance guide off of the Ford website. In one supplement it says to drain the fuel/water seperator by rotating the lever. In the other copy I download which is called the second print it says to remove the drain plug from the side. There's two different models? I'm about to change out my fuel filters and drain the seperator for the first time. I'm assuming that you drain the seperator first than change out that filter. Is there anything else that I should know. When you pull that plug will you only drain the seperator or does the fuel keep coming? Any tricks I should now about will be greatly appreciated.

I see from your profile that your truck is a 2006. I'm not sure if anything has changed but mine is a 2003. There is a small brass pipe plug in the side of the seperator that you remove to drain it. If you are real careful, you can do this without getting any fuel on you. I know because I've done it.

If your not careful, you will get fuel on you and your wife will make you throw away the clothes you were wearing when you did this little maintenance item. I know because I had this happen as well.

The fuel will stop when the canister is drained but that little canister holds more than you might think and diesel fuel will splash a lot further and easier than motor oil. Just another caution about making a potential mess.

Yes, drain the canister before replacing the fuel filter. Don't try to start the enigne between draining the cannister and removing the filter or it will fill right back up again.

You will get a lot of suggestions on how often to drain the canister. I usually drain mine everytime I change my oil since I already have all of my mess catching stuff out anyway and I'm already spending time under the truck.

Once again, I will preface this by stating that my truck is a 2003 6.0. Not sure if there has been a change in the cannister set-up. For your sake, I hope they did something to make draining the cannister less of a mess. Good luck with it.
