I have a 66 F-150 and the steering wheel is cracked really bad in a few places. I had a Hot Rod magazine when I was younger that showed how to fix them (But as usual I have misplaced it). You used some sort of epoxy to fill in the cracks. Then you sanded it down and repainted it. Does any one have any other suggestions or what kind of epoxy to use?
What you are looking for is epoxy putty. I have used some that I purchased through P.O.R.(paint over rust). I think they sold a steering wheel kit. Mix it fifty fifty mold it in the cracks then file and sand it to finish. Get it as close as possible though. This stuff is harder than rock.
A guy I know had the same problem and used good old body filler "Bondo" to fill the cracks and missing peices. It worked great and has held up for a long time without a hitch.
I have had great success with my '66 steering wheel by using the type of filler used on plastic model car kits. I opened some of the cracks with a tiny model car type file, soaked the bottom of the cracks with plastic cement, and filled the rest with the filler. Sand and refill a few times, depending on the wheel. After all sanding was done, I primed and painted the wheel with automotive type paint and waxed the final product. Be sure to mask off the center part of the wheel, to avoid paint on the spline and horn contact parts.
