I guess that is what it is called. On my 93 f150, 302, the pump at the bottom where the hose comes off and goes into a can on the fender. Then another flexible hose comes off and goes nowhere. Is that right? It has some vacuum to it when it is running. Don't remember seeing it just laying there?
Also my cat. convertors are no longer on the truck, do i need to do anything?
is the pump still neccessary?
Originally there would have been a hard tube connecting ports on the back of the cylinder heads, and this was fed from the air pump. There would also be another valve that directed air down to the cats. If the cats are gone and the head ports are plugged, you can remove the pump and use a shorter serpentine belt. There is no performance gain to be had with this though.
okay i understand that but is the flexible hose coming off the can supposed to be just there and not connected to something?
If you are talking about a coffee can looking can than this is your vacuum reservoir for AIR and EGR systems. You say the AIR system is gone and if the EGR system is also gone or plugged the no you do not need the can or hose.
I think he has the same setup as my 88 .There is a can (it may be black plastic) , near the coffee can that has a hose that sits loose on the inner fender. I think the smog pump draws fresh air through this hose and into the can and then to the rest of the secondary air system. I think it serves as either a muffler or has a filter inside to keep debris from damaging the air pump impeller. If required I can check the exact hose routing tonight.
