I have a 2002 5.4 superduty long bed super cab 4x4 off road, when accelerating first gear is normal, then second gear right at 3000 rpm the rpm's fall to 2800 and the go normal againand the 3rd and 4th are normal, why is this
Not to go too far off topic here, but what's with all the superdutys running the 5.4? My '65 Mustang's engine is nearly that big. It can't be a good towing engine, can it?

(just kidding)...
The 5.4L is a "good" engine to tow with...as long as you stay within the specs. YES, the V10 and PSD engines are "better" to tow with, but the 5.4L is "good". Also helps to have low gears...makes that 5.4L seem like a larger displacement engine.

The difference is:
1) Much longer stroke - the stroke is bigger than the bore.
2) OHC - better breathing, stock.
3) Much less internal friction.
To me, the 5.4 is basically an FE 360. And lots of people towed with those things
350-365ftlbs and 260-300HP depending on year and number of valves. That's a bit better than I thought it had. Though I hear 12mpg is common for the 5.4, and we get 13.5 from our V10.
As for marcus13's problem... you could get a programmer and reprogram the computer to shift or lockup differently. I'd bet it's not worth the cost though.
