'97 psd choking and sputtering sometimes
hey guys, I have a powerstroke that I know needs glow plugs. It has been starting fine but it starts to choke and sputter, then the check engine light comes on and sometimes it either dies or it starts running better and the check engine light goes out. I thought it was the cps, so I put a new one in and it's still running funny. Could it be a relay? I also put a new glow plug relay on it also.

thanks for the idea to check these things, I'll try to see if these are the problems. I also just changed out the vacuum booster, fuel, air, and oil filter about two weeks ago on this pain in my neck. It's been an expensive month.

You need to check the connectors to valve covers the pins mat be burnt and check to see if your getting 12volts to that piont. They are a way to check the glow plug relay to see if it is good or bad. I don't have the info with me right now if you think you need it let me know. My IDM caused my truck to act up and the check engine light to come on and off. Then one side of the engine went down.

Have your truck scanned, it should be storing a code even if the MIL is not on all the time. This will get you going in the right direction.
BTW: Search IPR in this forum to see if the symptoms are the same as yours.
